Basis Grotesque Font Family was designed by Jelle Bosma, Steve Matteson, Robin Nicholas, Colophon Foundry and published by Colophon Foundry. Basis Grotesque contains 16 styles and family package options. Initially drawn in a single Regular style for the comprehensive re-design of photography magazine Hotshoe. Basis was exhaustively refined and extended into a seven-style brood, and in-so-doing has been tested in copious iterations and sub-iterations across countless platforms, printed and otherwise.Initial points of inspiration — among them Akzidenz and various early Grotesques from Monotype — were ultimately eschewed-but-honored to create something slightly more behaved and shapely. An intentional skeletal similarity among the weights prompts an otherwise truly diverse clan of types, ranging from Light to Black.
